Why Red? Combining Black and White makes Grey... but ask any Red Mage and they will tell you because Red is Flashy, Red is Vibrant, and Red is the color of battle. Red Mages ply their craft in warfare, trading the power of the base magics for versatility and the ability to do things with mana that no other class seems capable of. A Red Mage is part mage, part healer, part warrior, part scholar... and understands very clear that they master none, but freely move between all. Many of their kin wear the trademarked broadbrimmed, Phoenix-plumed hats to advertise their particular brand of deadly skill.
